The ELLMA Spotlights is an opportunity to showcase impactful teaching practices and strategies Oakland Unified School District teachers of English Language Learners (ELLs) are using in their classrooms to support their ELL students. It is also a chance to spotlight students working to achieve their language goals. We hope these profiles uplift the hard work our teachers and students bring into their classrooms and inspire others.
The mission and vision of the ELLMA Office is to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to provide English Language Learners with equity and access to an excellent education, ensuring that all ELLs achieve at high levels in one or more languages and ultimately graduate college, career and community ready.
This vision is grounded in three fundamental beliefs:
- All educators are responsible for the language development of ELLs
- English Language Learners can achieve at high-levels with the right supports
- The language and cultural resources that students bring are tremendous assets that they bring to their learning and that of the community.
